Josephine lives by herself nearby, in a run-down ground-floor flat in Achrafieh which is in the worst possible condition: no water, no electricity, no heat, no window-panes, and the unpleasant smell of the filthy apartment greets your senses before you even step inside. This is because Josephine also lacks any type of sewer system, which coupled with the lack of running water makes for a sanitation disaster. No one in her family looks after her, and the only escape she has is visiting BASSMA's Resto Sourire for lunch. Here she is much loved by all the association's volunteers who are doing everything possible to alleviate her situation.
This is an example of the way deprived people are forced to live.
BASSMA's volunteers do their best to complete house renovations, as a heater is useless if an apartment lacks window-panes. Making homes warm for the winter is a priority for BASSMA!
The renovation project is an important component of BASSMA's family rehabilitation program, since it guarantees the security of family life.
